Guess who's coming to town!

Ok, so it's been a long time coming. I know you've had to wait a whole summer, but here is the first post of the new academic year and we start with big exciting news ... the Pope's UK visit from 16-19th September 2010.

Did you know that Pope Benedict XVI is the 265th Pope? Did you know he owns an I-Pod? Did you know he can fly a helicopter but not drive a car? Did you know his dad was a policeman...?  Did you know the Popemobile is made by Mercedes-Benz and can go from 0-60mph in 8 seconds???!

  1. Pope Benedict can play the piano and has a preference for Mozart and Beethoven. He likes cats and flowers- specially roses! He really like ice cream with caramel sauce poured over it!

  2. Pope Benedict XVI was the first Pope ever to have a I-pod! He will also be comming to England and many people will see him either in Hyde Park,Birmingham or in the crowds. In additon to this,many people have been saying the prayer that his safe journey to England has brought.

    • On April 20th the Pope Benedict XVI will visit Ground Zero and celebrate Mass at Yankee Stadium.
    Harry Connick, Jr., Jose Feliciano, and Dana will perform for the Holy Father at Yankee Stadium before the Mass.


    • Pope Benedict XVI has a pilot's license for the papal helicopter and likes to fly from the Vatican to the papal summer residence, Castel Gandolfo, but the pope does not have a driver's license as he never learned to drive a car.


    • Weideneder Brau Vertriebs GmbH, a family-owned brewery in nearby Tann, Germany, has created a special brew called Pabstbier/Pope Beer. The label reads, "Dedicated to the Great Son of our Homeland, Pope Benedict XVI."

    • Pope Benedict XVI was the youngest of three children whose father, Joseph Sr., was a police officer. His brother, Monsignor Georg Ratzinger, is a retired priest.

    • Pope Benedict XVI's sister Maria was his housekeeper until she died at the age of 69.

    Did you know pope Benedict XVI was a consulter at the second Vacation council in 1962?
    He also is the only Pope to own a ipod !! In 1977 he was named Prefect of the congregation for the Doctrine of faith.
    He also became Pope when he was aged 78.

He loves classical music and is said to play the piano for a few minutes each day.He has a preference for Mozart and Beethoven.He walks in the Vatican Gardens every day at exactly 4pm.It is widely rumored he enjoys Fanta orange soda, and he prefers fresh-squeezed orange juice.He has six email addresses.   6. In actual fact his real name is Joseph Alois Ratzinger. Did you know that Pope Benedict XVI is the first German pope since Victor II who unfortunately died in 1057? He was the first pope to have been invited to the UK specified by the Queen. Did you also know that Pope Benedict XVI can talk in 6 different languages or more fluently?

    Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger is elected as Pope on Apr. 19, 2005 - the new head of the world's 1.1 billion Roman Catholics.

    Joseph Ratzinger was born April 16, 1927, in Germany. He was ordained a priest June 29, 1951.

    He spent his adolescent years in Traunstein, and was called into the auxiliary anti-aircraft service in the last months of World War II. From 1946 to 1951, the year in which he was ordained a priest and began to teach, he studied philosophy and theology at the University of Munich and at the higher school in Freising.

    In 1953 he obtained a doctorate in theology. Four years later, he qualified as a university teacher. He then taught dogma and fundamental theology at the higher school of philosophy and theology of Freising, then in Bonn from 1959 to 1969, Muenster from 1963 to 1966, Tuebinga from 1966 to 1969.

    From 1969, he was a professor of dogmatic theology and of the history of dogma at the University of Regensburg and vice president of the same university.

    In 1962 he became a consultor at the Second Vatican Council. In March 1977, Pope Paul VI elected him archbishop of Munich and Freising and on May 28, 1977, he was ordained a bishop -- the first diocesan priest after 80 years to take over the pastoral ministry of this large Bavarian diocese.

    He was elevated to cardinal in June 1977. In November 1981 he was named prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and president of the Biblical Commission and of the Pontifical International Theological Commission.

    He was elected vice dean of the College of Cardinals in November 1998. In November 2002, the Pope approved his election, by the order of cardinal bishops, as dean of the College of Cardinals.

    Cardinal Ratzinger was president of the Commission for the Preparation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and after six years of work he presented the new catechism to the Holy Father in 1992.

    A towering intellectual, a deeply holy man, a kind hearted and strong in his beliefs, he has been one of the closest confidants of Pope John Paul II.

  11. Pope Benedict XVI became pope at the age of 78 and is now 86 so he has now been the pope for 8 years and he is also the 265th to be a pope.
    although we call him benedict is real name is in fact Joseph Alois Ratzinger, he is the very fist pope with an ipod and is able to fly a helicopter, although he lives in Italy he s originally from Germany. He can also speak 6 different languages fluently.

  17. Pope Benedict loves music varying from Mozart, Bach, Palestrina. He also loves cats and reading. Also, he likes eating cakes and wearing cufflinks.

    He has an email address and is the first pope to speak on a mobile phone and even has his own podcast!

  27. Did you know Pope XVI loves mozzarella cheese made from buffalo milk he is sent this by the Bishops in the Campania region of Italy as a gift to the pope.
    Another interesting fact about the Pope is a man named Adiano Steffanelli, makes Pope XVI's red shoes from calf or kid leather for the winter and nappa leather for the summer.

  30. People think (not a certain fact) he likes Fanta Orange and fresh orange, also he enjoys classical music such as Mozart. This shows that aswell as him being a highly important and influential leader of the Catholic faith as the Pope, Josef Ratzsinger is a normal person just as you or I.

    The Pope can speak 7 different languages fluently, he has also visited other countries aswell as Uk. Some are .. USA, France, Cameroon etc.
